Does this need a SIM card or a monthly fee?

No. The tracker has no SIM card and no data plan, and both Apple Find My and Android Find Hub are free to the end user. It reports through the phones of people who pass nearby.

Will it work if the vehicle is taken far away?

It works wherever there are phones. A tracker inside a stolen car will keep reporting as the car passes people, which is how these networks cover long distances without a SIM. A vehicle left somewhere with no passing phones will only update when one appears.

Can the magnet be trusted on a moving vehicle?

The magnetic mount is for fixing to a metal surface behind a panel or under a seat, not for exposed mounting, so the vehicle’s own trim carries the load. Where there is no metal surface we supply the case for a cable tie or a screw fixing.
